The region of Poitou-Charante is steeped in history. The capital Poitiers was founded before the Roman Empire and there have been several big battles here. Two of those battles in 732 AD and 1356 AD played such a big role in the city that a local brewery has named two beers after the years they were fought in. Poitiers offers you 2000 years of art and history, beautiful churches, wonderful parks and fabulous shopping through pedestrian streets in the centre.

MARKETS

All year round there are markets, concerts, exhibitions and festivals. In the medieval town of Chauvigny, 12 km from La Pomme d' Or, there is a large market every Saturday morning. Here you can find delicacies like oysters and other crustaceans, delicious chevré-cheeses from local producers, wonderful vegetables, fruit, meat, flowers, baskets, even live poultry. In the quarter Couronneriers a part of Poitiers there is another large colourful market every Wednesday and Sunday morning that we really can recommend.

HORSE RIDING

For those who are interested in horse riding the Club Hippique and Pony-Club are perfect and close by.

PARKS

Every year three million people visit the 2 hectare film- and activity park Le Fututoscope (www.futuroscope.com). In 2007 the park celebrated 20 years and offers the whole family entertainment and an exciting experience with shows and films. Don't miss the spectacular evening show, which ends the day.

The younger ones probably prefer activities like the Vallée des Singes (www.la.vallee-des-singes.fr) The Monkey-Valley with over 30 different species to discover or L' île aux Serpants (www.ileauxserpents.com) Snakes' Island with alligators, Caiman Alligators, monitor lizards, snakes, tortoises, lizards, crocodiles, chameleons and mongoose from all over the world. About an hours car-journey away you'll find ZooParc de Beauval (www.zoobeauval.com) with over 4000 animals and animal shows daily, it's considered as one of Europe's most beautiful zoos.

There are also several activity and adventure parks like Saint-Benoit Aventure (www.stbenoitaventure.new.fr), Fantasy Forest (www.fantasyforest.fr) and Active Park Moncontour (www.exoloisirs.com).

BATHING

For those who fancy swimming or paddling canoes the river Vienne isn't far away. In the neighbouring village Bonneuil-Matours 3 km from the house there is a nice beach for sunbathing and swimming. There you will also find canoes to rent, a playground, sports ground and a snack bar.

A short drive from the house is a lake at St Cyr (approx. 15 mins drive). Here it is possible to windsurf, rent sailboats and paddleboats and play on the waterslide.

FOOD AND WINE

It's always nice to bring home local specialties from your holidays. Why not take a drive along “Route de vin” and visit the local winemakers, taste their wines and buy a bottle or two. The district doesn't belong to Frances' most well known but the wines are expressive and fruity and go very well with the famous local goat cheese Chabichou and foie gras. It is also possible to visit the producers and buy cheeses and foie gras at the farms.

In Neuville de Poitou there is an oil press factory. Founded in 1850, the work is powered by both electricity and hydraulics. The stone grinding wheel and the hydraulic presses date from 1320, yet the tanks are the most modern on the market ensuring the best conditions possible for decanting and stocking the virgin, hazel, almond, walnut and sunflower oils.

DAY EXCURSIONS

Perhaps you would like to make a longer excursion. The castles and vineyards of the Loire-Vallee are about an hours drive away. We recommend a journey to Cognac. It is about 150 km to Cognac as it is to the Atlantic-coast. At the coast you will find La Rochelle one of France's largest seaports, almost 1000 years old. There is an aquarium we think is well worth seeing. From the coast are the islands Ile d'Oreréon and Il de Ré with long beaches and clam and oyster farms.

GOLF

If you want a more active holiday, maybe some golf is what you are after? You will find several excellent and easily accessible golf courses in the area. The closest is Golf Club du Haut Poitou (www.golfduhautpoitou.com) located at St Cyr by the lake and open-air park. There is an excellent course with 18 + 9 holes, a large clubhouse with a good restaurant and only 15 minutes drive away. If you drive in the other direction from the house you'll find Mignaloux-Beauvoire (www.manoirdebeauvoir.com), which is a popular park and forest-course also with restaurant and clubhouse. An the health resort La Roche Posay, 30 minutes drive, lies the forest-course  Le Connetable. Golf des Forges is a park-course with 27 holes and 40 minutes drive away. We will be glad to help you with the booking, there is rarely any problem, with usually plenty of available space.

ACTIVITIES IN THE VILLAGE

Why not rent some of our bikes and take a trip down to the Moulière Forest or take a long walk to the forest or the river Vienne?. We will gladly help you with suggestions of suitable cycling roads. At the village premises Salle de Fête you can play tennis, we can lend you rackets or why not do like the French, play a game of "Petanque"? We have balls and there is a good Petanque ground next to the tennis court.
